Candleternity

Evgeny Mikhnov-Voitenko pop/off/art 2.0 at Bolshoi Palashevsky lane, building 9.

The pop/off/art gallery presents a solo exhibition, “Candleternity,” by Evgeny Mikhnov-Voitenko (1932–1988), a key figure in the Leningrad underground of the 1960s–1980s. The title of the project refers to the artist’s phrase, “human candleness,” formulated by Mikhnov while working on the “Candle People” series (1960s). The exhibition will feature works from this cycle along with compositions from the 1960s, executed in ink on paper: more than 30 sheets from the same period will line up in a consistent narrative chain. The chamber space of the exhibition will be divided into two narratives, the distinctive feature of which is the technical features of Mikhnov-Voitenko’s graphics. Monochrome cycles of works of the 1960s are the result of his fruitful experiments with ink on paper, during which he achieved amazing images and unthinkable plastic solutions. The range of techniques is quite wide: from dripping to automatic writing. A special feature of the series "Candle People" is the anthropocentric approach to creating an abstract image. Silhouettes or faces are guessed in spots and lines, however, all these are just obsessions that excite the imagination of the viewer.

Time revisited

Vladimir Kupriyanov Yekaterinburg, Yeltsin Center

The Yeltsin Center Art Gallery, together with the pop/off/art gallery, presents the exhibition "Vladimir Kupriyanov. Return of Time", which will be the artist's first major retrospective outside the capital. The project brings back to the domestic art scene the name of Vladimir Kupriyanov, one of the greatest Soviet and Russian photo artists of the late 20th - early 20th century. The exhibition was first shown in the fall of 2024 at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and was the result of large-scale work with the artist's archive and an attempt to reconstruct the master's authorial world. The exhibition in Yekaterinburg will continue the study of Vladimir Kupriyanov's legacy and will open up to viewers a different view of the curators on previously revealed themes in the artist's work.

Rostislav Lebedev / Rough cuts

The catalog was released for Rostislav Lebedev’s exhibition "Rough cuts” which took place at MMOMA from November 9, 2023 to January 28, 2024. The name of the project referred to Lebedev’s artistic method. Unlike many authors who use subtle, hidden “montage” of ready-made images, he prefers the sharp dissonance of images, a sharp transition from one sign to another. It is precisely such “Rough cuts” that, according to the artist, are capable of carving new, fresh meanings from the simple fact of the meeting of two well-known images. More than 100 works by the author were presented in 9 halls, each of which was addressed to a specific artistic medium of Lebedev.
