Vika Shumskaya is an artist-painter working with the language of abstraction; one of the most promising authors of the middle generation.
Shumskaya was born in Ukraine in 1968. In 1985-1989 she studied at the Ural College of Fine Arts and Design. In 1996 - 2002 she studied at the Kharkov State Academy of Design and Arts. In 2001 she was a Cultural City Network Fellow (Graz, Austria). Having gone through all the stages of creative search, typical for artists who grew up in the post-Soviet cultural space, having overcome the passion for photography, Vika Shumskaya came to the formation of her own recognizable author's style. This is a subtle, complex painting, balancing on the verge of abstraction and reality, an active experiment with mixed media. Solo exhibitions of Shumskaya were held at key art venues in Russia and Ukraine, her works were included in the main project of the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art “More Light” (Manege Central Exhibition Hall, 2013) and in the project “Not a Museum*. Laboratory of Aesthetic Suspicions” of the parallel program of the European Biennale of Contemporary Art MANIFESTA 10 (Art Space “New Industry”, St. Petersburg, 2014). Lives and works in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia.
