Evgeny Gorokhovsky is a Moscow artist of the middle generation. He was born in Odesa into the family of architect Eduard Gorokhovsky, who later became one of the greatest Russian artists of the second half of the century. Evgeny Gorokhovsky came of age in the 1970s, in the immediate circle of the masters of "other art" — Ilya Kabakov, Viktor Pivovarov, Erik Bulatov.
It was then that his own style emerged, at the intersection of photorealistic depiction and metaphysical, conceptually reflected content. In fact, Evgeny Gorokhovsky became one of the founders of Russian photorealism, to which he gave a distinctly philosophical resonance.
In the artist's creative method, photography — understood as a "quotation of reality" — serves as the starting point. However, the semantic emphasis is placed not on achieving photographic likeness in painting, but on the nature of a higher order. Out of hundreds of photographs, he selected only those that reveal a particular energetic structure, "hidden meanings."
The inner theme of many of Gorokhovsky's works is the discovery of a metaphysical principle within the pictures of the physical world, marking it with special signs, symbols, and structures. Ornamental geometry embedded into the works seems to remind us of the presence of a universal harmony in the world — the rational design of existence according to an original plan. Thus, the subjects of the artist's works are perceived not as everyday reality, but as sign visions.
